Minimalism v Simplicity

There is a difference, and the later seems to often be mistaken for the former. In all spheres of design, simplicity implies a level of functionality; that a problem has been responded to with a measured economy of elements. Minimalism often discards functionality for adherence to style.

We are lucky that many examples of favouring simplicity in design exists today. People respond positively to good design - they like nice glossy ads, coffee machines that work with the touch of a button, and meals that are prepared and served with a minimum of fuss. It comes as a surprise then that people feel they are missing out when they commission design and it doesn't contain everything and the kitchen sink. Why?
