I had lunch with a friend the other day who used to work for what I would describe as a traditional Brisbane advertising agency. That's not a negative way of describing them but they're established and recognised in what they do, and have a global presence. She's now setting out on her own in a new venture doing something similar but on a smaller scale. Even in her new venture, her and her business partner have years, if not decades of experience to call upon to sell their new business forward.
So just before we parted she asked me 'why do I share everything on my social media sites?'

She'd just been paying me out about my comment 'pick up the receiver...I'll make you a believer.' She didn't know her Depeche Mode, which I'd been listening to in the car and felt the need to share. (Not while I was driving I hasten to add)
My point to her in return was about my personal brand - brand Simon Dell. A lot of what I do on-line is designed to cultivate and manage my personal brand. I try to project an image as an expert in the domain of marketing, advertising, branding and social media. But at the same time, I inject a 'personal' aspect to what I do. Constant communication about marketing could be...well...boring. I want people to engage with not just my knowledge base, but also with my personality. After all, if all I was supplying was information then I'd be not a whole lot different to Google.
Personal branding in business is vitally important, especially when you're trying to establish your reputation in a particular field. In fact, that's really the triumvirate of success in my opinion - strong personal brand, reputation and skills. You can be successful with two of the three, but with all three, you're unstoppable!
Irrespective of whether you work for a Brisbane advertising agency or anywhere in any business, have an objective look at your personal branding. It can be vitally important to your success, promotion opportunities and pay rises!

Good post Simon - I think your totally spot on in terms of personal branding. We do a lot of work through Asia and they have a very long tradition of business relationships that is in effect based on the power of personal branding. They call it Guanxi. Look forward to your next post, cheers.
