This could equally apply to Facebook as well as Twitter, and its actually from Facebook that I picked up this example.
I recently signed up to a local Brisbane business networking chapter where we go every week to learn about each others businesses, pass on leads and generally just develop our businesses. I'd been to a few similar events before and generally they were packed full of strange people. But these guys are all nice and normal, switched on, fun and keen on learning. So I signed up. One of the guys who comes along every week is part of a building company and yesterday afternoon, I noticed in my live feed on a friend looking for a builder for some rennovations. Two phone calls, a text and an email later, and customer is put in touch with supplier; job done.
So the point of this? The point is this:
LISTEN.
Or in the case of Twitter & Facebook, READ. The art of communication is a subtle one, but as anyone will tell you, the ability to receive information inwards is as important as the ability to expel information outwards.
Take some time over your social media streams. Sit and read your Twitter stream. Look at the links your friends are posting on Facebook. Check out the photos being uploaded on Flickr. You'll be amazed at all the good stuff you miss sometimes.
