Simple Marketing Ideas

Marketing is a big, complicated beast. Scary. With big fangs.

Many businesses end up not understanding it, taking bad advice from another marketing agency Brisbane or chasing channels that don’t deliver a good return on their marketing dollars. I recently spoke to a room full of club managers (RSLs and sports clubs etc) and asked them who in the room had a plan for their marketing? A hard copy printed-out plan sat on their desks. In a room full of about 60 people, one person put their hand up.

Anyhow, the point of this post is that even with a plan, the simple marketing ideas are often the best. Let’s take the guys at Supergeek for example. One of their key marketing pillars are their branded vehicles, which can be seen driving about the suburbs of major Australian towns and cities.

Branding like that on a vehicle probably costs $2,000 to $4,000, depending on the scope and scale of the design and isn’t something to do lightly. However, whilst Supergeek have realised the benefits of such branding, they also make the most of any available opportunity for the public to see it.

The image below is a typical example of where, during rush how when business is typically slow for them, they’ll park by a major road, side-on, and use the vehicles as a temporary billboard. Brilliant. During peak traffic times, their brand could be viewed by 100s, if not 1,000s, of potential customers.

They’ve even taken it one step further. When I was driving out of Toowoomba one evening, I noticed that four of the vehicles had all parked themselves on the side of one of the main roads leaving the town, overlapping each other at an angle. All the Supergeek staff were also standing outside the cars, wearing their corporate polo shirt uniforms.

It made for a strong, heavily branded visual, reinforced by showing potential customers the ‘real’ side of the business and the staff that can help.

Sure, the original branding on the vehicles would have cost the business, but the idea of parking them on the side of a road during rush hour is one of the best simple marketing ideas; it’s effective and cheap. The only thing it costs is time.

Simple marketing ideas are exactly as they sound: simple. But more often than not because you’ve been working on your business for so long, they can become clouded and difficult to see. One of the best reasons to sit down with someone like TwoCents is for your business to be seen in a more objective light, and pick up on those areas you may have missed.
